Owner/Operator Compliance Requirements

To ensure safety and legal operation, Boat.Rent requires all owners and operators to provide and maintain up-to-date documentation according to the region of operation. Review the requirements below and ensure your documents are current and accessible by our compliance team upon request. Failure to maintain valid documentation may result in deactivation of your listing.

United States Owner/Operators

To list and operate your vessel in the United States on Boat.Rent, you must maintain valid, current documentation and comply with all relevant legal requirements.

Required Documentation Includes:

  • USCG Certificate of Documentation or valid State Registration
  • Commercial/charter insurance policy (Protection & Indemnity, with passenger liability)
  • For vessels carrying passengers for hire:
    • Inspected vessels: Certificate of Inspection (COI)
    • Uninspected (≤6 pax): Captain must hold OUPV (“6-pack”) or Master license
  • Captain’s licence (if you or your skipper operate the vessel)
  • Local permits as required (city/port/park concessions, mooring/commercial use)
  • Workers’ compensation/Jones Act coverage, if crew are employed

Platform Policy:

  • Crewed or day-trip listings require both a captain’s licence and commercial insurance.
  • Bareboat listings require commercial insurance and confirmation of charter-legal bareboat terms (no skipper supplied by owner).

Mediterranean Owner/Operators (Greece, Croatia, Italy, Spain, France)

For vessels operated in Mediterranean waters, documentation requirements depend on vessel flag and local law:

Required Documentation Includes:

  • Vessel registration (with commercial or charter status)
  • Charter authorization/permit for the relevant country/region (e.g., Greek professional licence, Croatian charter permit)
  • Commercial/charter insurance with passenger liability (and pollution coverage if required)
  • Skipper certification: RYA Yachtmaster with Commercial Endorsement, national equivalent, or STCW where required (for crewed or owner-skippered)
  • For bareboat charters: renter must provide International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or appropriate national licence at booking
  • Safety compliance certificate (e.g., MCA code or national safety certifications)
  • Ship station and operator radio licences where applicable

Platform Policy:

  • Crewed listings require skipper credentials, commercial insurance, and country charter permit.
  • Bareboat listings require commercial insurance, permit (if required), and renter licence capture.

Important Notice

All documentation must be kept up to date for the entire period your vessel is listed. Boat.Rent conducts regular compliance reviews and may request updates at any time. Listings with invalid or expired documents are subject to suspension or removal.
